POV: Zen

"Hurry up, you dumb, limbed bitch!" The arbok guard escorting me yelled. "I thought legs were supposed to make you faster." I swear, if my hands weren't chained behind my back, I'd use my sharp claws to tear him apart, but I've seen what happened to a prisoner who tried to fight back. Those who did as they were told had a chance to become a slave, while anyone who acted defiantly were brutally killed in front of the others. Hell, the other day I saw two parents get executed in front of their kits. Sometimes I saw the male guards take a female prisoner away and when they'd come back, the female talked of being used by the gaurd. "Stop here, vermin." The guard said as he stopped in front of a large door. In front of the door, was a large female seviper with a green tail blade. I knew royalty when I saw it.

"Is this the slave I requested for my son?" She asked.

"Yes, Your Highness." The guard bowed to the queen. She sent him off to do whatever then looked me in the eye.

"I am Queen Viper of the kingdom of Serpentis," She said, apparently she was proud to lead a pack of heartless snakes, "tell me your name."

"Zen." I muttered weakly.

"Well, Zen," she hissed, adding even more layers of disgust on my name, "do you know why you're here?"

"No." she answered my unenthusiasm by striking me across my cheek with the flat side of her tail blade, knocking me down.

"You will address me as 'Your Highness,' you filthy vermin. Understand?" she stood over me.

"Yes... Your Highness." I was barely able to utter while getting up.

"You should be honored, Zen," She continued, ignoring my pain, "Not many prisoners get to become slaves to royalty. You shall do everything my son, Prince Sevin, asks of you, or you will be punished. Understand?"

"Yes, Your Highness."

"Good," she hissed again, "now follow me." She opened the door and I followed her in to find an ornate room, bigger than I've ever seen. In the corner, looking out the window, I saw another seviper He was smaller than the queen, but he also had the green tail blade. "Sevin?" She called. I heard the prince give a small sigh of exasperation before turning to us.

"Yes, mother?" He asked. He seemed depressed for some reason, but did his best to hide it.

"I know how sad you've been recently, so I decided to bring you a present." She turned to me. "Her name is Zen, and she'll be your new slave." I barely noticed a slight look of disgust on his face, but his eyes were focused on his mother. I doubt she noticed, though. "Is she okay, or would you prefer another one?"

"No, mother, she's fine." He replied, putting on a fake smile. "Oh, and mother," He said, "Could you call for Claire to come by?"

"Of course, dear." She said before she walked away and gave me a parting glance, as if to say something along the lines of "worthless trash." After she left, the prince sighed and dropped his false smile. He turned to me and started looking me over for a few seconds until I noticed a small blush on his cheeks and he turned away and went towards a box on the table.

"I'm really sorry for anything the guards may have done to you," he apologized. Wait. Why was he apologizing? "I hope you don't hold the actions of my people against me. Honestly, I don't understand the reason for all this mistreatment, myself." It took me a minute to register all of that.

"Thanks, Prince Sevin, but—"

"Please, call me Sev." He interrupted as he took a key from the box and unlocked my shackles. "Have a seat." He mention towards the bed.

"Thanks, Sev, for the apology, but you don't have to apologize for that." I said, "I'm used to it." I was rubbing my wrists to get the circulation going back in my hands. I don't know how long I had those chains on, but it felt like an eternity.

"A king must take responsibility for his country." He sighed as though he recited the line many times before. "Those bruises look pretty bad," He said after a short bout of silence, "Claire is pretty good at fixing up wounds like that. She should be here soon."

"Why are you being so nice to me?" I asked, wondering why he wasn't beating me or calling me names like the guards were only minutes before.

"Because, unlike most others, I believe that the prisoners are living beings too." He explained, "Just because you're not serpentine, doesn't mean you don't deserve good treatment."

"Then why do the others think differently?" I asked. He was about to reply when we heard a knock at the door.

"Come in." Sev called. A young female dragonair floated in with a rather large bruise on her side. "Claire!" Sev said, surprised to see her in such shape, "What happened to you?"

"Oh, nothing," she answered. It didn't look like nothing, "Your brother is just... You know..." She trailed off. Sev let out a sigh.

"I told you to stay away from him and his oversized ego." He said. "Confronting him never ends well for anyone."

"I know, but lately he's been getting more and more aggressive." Claire said "I didn't even say anything this time. He just barged right into the infirmary." She explained before realizing I was there. "Who's this?" She asked, moving in closer to inspect who I was.

"This is Zen." Sev introduced me. "Mother wants her to be my slave." He continued, rolling his eyes at the mention of his mother.

"Hello," Claire said, "I'm Claire, I work in the infirmary."

"Can you heal up any of her wounds?" He asked.

"Right," she complied and went right away to checking out any injuries I had, "Oh, and, by the way, I got another message from Jack, he says he came across another problem, so the special anti-venom might not be ready for another few months."

"What happened this time?" Sev sighed.

"He wouldn't say," Claire said while checking out a scar on my shoulder, "but it must've been big. He said he had to take all of his notes and find a new lab." She thought a minute before blushing. "He always was a magnet for trouble." She added with a chuckle. "There, you're fine." The dragoness cheerfully told me, "Just stay out of trouble and try not to agitate that scar on your shoulder."

"Thanks." I said meekly.

"You don't have to be shy around us, Zen," She said, draping her tail around my shoulders, trying to comfort me, "Sev and I aren't like the others. And Sev's really nice," We turned to Sev, who was looking out the window with a melancholy look on his face. "It just takes a lot to cheer him up sometimes." I was listening, but something was stuck in my head.

"What did you mean by 'anti-venom'?"

"Oh, that?" She asked, "It's nothing, I'll tell you later." Sev, for some reason, chose that moment to speak up.

"Uh, Claire?" He asked, "can I talk with you in private? Zen looks like she needs her rest."

"Sure." She said as they turned towards the large, ornate door I had come through only minutes before.

"Zen, go ahead and use the bed." I admit, I was still a little wary about all this, but sleep sounded so wonderful right now…
A bit more delayed than I prefer, but I kinda like how this turned out.

Now, I should clarify: Serpentis is a nation filled with serpentine Pokémon. While there are some free non-serpentine Pokémon around, it's still a rare sight. No one really knows why the serpentine Pokémon hate the non-serpentine Pokémon and very few care. Prince Sevin (pronounced “seven”) isn't like that, however. He doesn't even want to be a prince.
